Chapter Eleven

Clara

Three days later…

“Clara, call him back and say yes. By blocking your happiness, you do yourself a disservice. We’ll keep Bryce entertained. Go out and have fun. Please. I don’t want to see you sad anymore.”

Those were the words my mother shared with me earlier that day. I knew she was right. I couldn’t get Cody off my mind. Quite frankly, I was happy whenever I thought about him.

Bryce and I were occupied at my parents' house. I went out shopping nearly every day with my mom. And Bryce went on multiple outings a day with my dad. Even though Cody was out of town finishing up a construction project, he called me nightly and we talked about our day.

I was excited for him to get back to town. He didn’t know just how excited.

On the day he returned, he called and asked me if I would be his date at a holiday dinner held by the national builders association he was a member of. There would be dinner and dancing, he said. That meant people. Crowds. I told him no at first, but promised we’d talk later after dinner. I didn’t expect my mom to be in the hallway listening. She gave me an earful and some words of advice that I needed to hear.

I was so glad I listened to her. This wasn’t just a date though. This night would be my night of letting go. Facing my fears. Choosing my destiny.

The night seemed magical. Neither of us hesitated when we found ourselves crammed together under a mistletoe while waiting in line to nab some treats. He had lowered his lips to mine sweetly and I almost forgot that we were in public. The kiss was sweet and brief and left my heart fluttering like butterflies.

Cody felt so right. I wanted more of that. I never wanted this night to end.

“I haven’t danced like that in years,” I exclaimed as Cody started the engine and turned up the heat.

“Me either. But my two-step moves can hardly qualify as dancing. You’re a pro though,” he said, grinning.

“I love dancing. Blame it on all the music videos I watched growing up.”

“I could tell. Dinner was pretty light. Plus I think we burned it all off on the dance floor. Wanna stop to get some late-night snacks?” he asked, maneuvering his truck onto the main road.

“We can if you like. Is this your way of extending our date?” I teased.

He chuckled. “I’m trying.”

“I’m not ready for the fun to be over yet either.” I looked down at my wristwatch. “It’s one a.m. I’m sure my mom and dad are asleep by now. Bryce probably wouldn’t have made it up past midnight.” I rolled my eyes. “I can’t even believe I’m discussing how late it is like I have a curfew or something.” I blushed.

He grinned. “I’ve got an idea.”

“Anything but stumbling into their house this late. Oh, the questions they must have…”

“Nah. The fun’s not over yet. You asked earlier what I’m good at besides building.
